![]() ![]() I have never once been arguing for whether the rule SHOULD be the way it is. Just like Searing Smite, Elemental Weapon, Holy Weapon, Banishing Smite, Divine Favor, Zephyr Strike.Ĭompare this to Bless, ".the next time a creature makes an attack roll."Ĭompare this to melee spell attacks: Shocking Grasp, Thunder Clap, Inflict Wounds.Ĭompare this to touch ranged spells: Shillelagh, Light, Magic Stone, Magic WeaponĪgain, you not accepting a rule has zero bearing on whether it is RAW □♂️ This is not a touch ability like, it is delivered with a weapon strike. any object you can wield in one or two hands, such as broken glass, A bound creature unable to use their hands, a creature that is naked and disarmed and has no means of putting any possible object into their hands, cannot use this ability. A creature with no hands cannot wield a melee weapon and therefore cannot use this ability. If it was to allow unarmed strikes that would include punches, kicks, headbutts, and sitting down violently on someones face. This ability requires a melee weapon in the hand of the creature and operates through that weapon. While an unarmed strike is a melee attack, it is not a melee weapon attack. In either case, the distinction seems meaningless enough to allow a smite on both armed and unarmed attacks. That or the developers have no idea what to do with natural weapons. This leads to the question: Can a natural weapon be both a weapon and an unarmed strike? It seems the developers are in a situation, where A and B both apply to natural weapons. ![]() These can be spell attacks or weapon attacks, where the "weapon" might be a manufactured item or a natural weapon, such as a claw or tail spike.Īnd then we get the Monsters of the Multiverse, which apparently claims, that they are modified unarmed strikes. Melee and Ranged Attacks: The most common actions that a monster will take in combat are melee and ranged attacks. Then we have the Basic Rules, which still mention natural weapons among weapons. Which isn't terribly important in the grand scheme of things, but here the designers claim, that natural weapons count as weapons and are thus eligible for smite. They are something you do with an unarmed part of your body. ![]() In contrast, unarmed strikes are not weapons.
